Hi all,

I recently read a suggestion to a new blogger in a FB thread that they should submit their new posts to GSC to index. I have always waited for Google to do its thing, but I was curious, after a year of consistently posting once a week, how long does it take Google to take notice?

I did a URL inspection of my most recent posts. Google has discovered but not indexed anything I’ve published since mid October – maybe 15 posts? Several months back I started adding internal links to all my posts and sometimes external ones if I can find relevant links.

I just want to manage my expectations and find out if I should start manually submitting them each week when I publish or just standby and wait it out. I’ve heard people say it only takes a few days for Google to index a new page, but I’m assuming this is on a more established website.

I’ve heard people say it only takes a few days for Google to index a new page, but I’m assuming this is on a more established website.

You’re spot on with this assumption, Summer!

This is very much an “it depends” kind of answer. 😄

  • For a site like Pinch of Yum, which has thousands of posts and has been publishing content for **checks watch** 13 years, content can get picked up in Google within hours.
  • For a smaller site like Food Blogger Pro, which has hundreds of posts and has been publishing content for 10 years and has hundreds of posts, it might take a bit longer.
  • For a brand-new site, it’ll take a lot longer.

But number of posts and age aren’t the only factors. For instance, t also depends on what the post is about and what search terms might surface from that post.

I recently read a suggestion to a new blogger in a FB thread that they should submit their new posts to GSC to index. I have always waited for Google to do its thing

For our sites, we don’t submit a new post to Google Search Console with a request to crawl. It definitely doesn’t hurt to do that, but I don’t know how much it helps. Especially if you’ve submitted your sitemap to GSC.

If it were me, I’d take a very similar approach to what you’re doing:

  1. Publish the most helpful post possible and ensure you’re checking all the boxes regarding on-page technical SEO.
  2. Within that post, include helpful and relevant links to your other content and maybe other’s content as well (internal and external links).
  3. Include links to that new post from other content published on your site.
  4. Share the post on all your platforms (social, email, etc).

If you’re doing keyword research, start by looking for those topics that are (1) within your focus area, (2) not too competitive while (3) still having some search volume.

All this to say, I think you’re on the right track. I’d focus most of your time on finding out how to make your content best in class for your readers while following SEO best practices.

You’re doing great!

Glad to see a thorough answer on this topic. I too am a new blog and I can see that not everything gets indexed not even after months. But I do have a few posts showing up in search a bit higher in the last few months. That’ll keep my spirits up 😆

Thank you for the thorough reply! All that makes sense. I started applying keyword research and focusing on SEO about 4 months ago, so I will just be patient! I’m glad to know I’m on the right track and my focus is in the right place 🙂

Everyone,

I think it was likely me that suggested that new bloggers use Google Search Console to request indexing.

Bjork is right to say “It definitely doesn’t hurt to do that, but I don’t know how much it helps. Especially if you’ve submitted your sitemap to GSC.”  I’m a new food blogger, but I’ve been in eCommerce and Google Search for 15 years, and a year ago I’d have resoundingly said “it shouldn’t be necessary”.

And yet …

I began my site in August 2023 and I was surprised and upset to see weeks go by and no pages get indexed. I tried to be patient, but six weeks after submitting a sitemap, I gave in and handpicked ten pages and submitted them specifically for indexing. 2 days later, all ten were indexed.

It’s now 5 months later. I have a few hundred indexed pages and I add new ones every day. If I don’t routinely submit them for indexing via Google Search Console, they just sit in a state “Not Indexed”. I’ve (twice) sat on my hands for 3 weeks to see if I have passed the point where Google likes me enough to pick up new pages and index them, but I don’t appear to be there yet.

So, this might be just me, but I have absolute evidence that for my new site, I have to do the hard work of explicitly asking for indexing if I want things to happen in any sort of timely way. My pages are SEO-ready, are linked from other pages and once indexed, they pick up traffic. I think my site (www.relaxedrecipes.com) is just not mature enough yet in terms of domain authority and I’m working on that.

At the end of the day, Bjork is right that it doesn’t do any harm and for me, it works well to request indexing individually. It’s totally boring, but without it, I’d be dead in the water. I’ll try to remember to add to this thread if and when I find I don’t need to do this any more.

Jo

Hi everyone, I had a similar experience to Jo.  When I first launched my site, my first 2-3 posts sat as non-indexed for weeks, so I decided to try submitting them for indexing, and within hours they were indexed.  So I just continued doing that for each new post (not many as I have had to take a break for a family emergency.)

This morning, after reading this post, I made some necessary updates to my first post, and submitted it again, as it had changed, I kept an eye on it as I was curious, and it looks like it was indexed in under an hour.

It is likely important to note that my site is brand new, and as much as I have been trying to follow everything I have learned here as I build my site, I am certain I am making thousands of mistakes, my writing is not up to even my own standards, and my photography is completely beginner.  So I doubt its a matter of Google liking my site that much, lol.

I am not sure what is causing this, but it sounds to me like maybe others could give this a try?

Super helpful insights here, everyone! Thanks for sharing. Love it!

Sounds like there have been a handful of examples of people submitting a URL in Google Search Console and having a positive result with Google indexing it in a relatively short amount of time (hours). Good to know!

I have always asked for indexing since the beginning and usually latest next day Page was indexed and visible in google search but that was not the case even if I have followed same strucure, template, Format for the last blog post which is worring me a bit😬 strangely enough it does not appeard on the not indexed list either. I feel discouraged. I finally had a System and everything Was working well but now I just hit a wall with this. I have only two days since asking to Index last Post but the more time flies the less motivated I feel 🙁

Anyone else experiencing longer wait time after requesting indexing in search console for the Page to be indexed?

What is longest that it took you?

Thank you

Is there a way I could figure it out why page was not indexed even if requested and page is idexable?

thank you

Hi Otilia,

The results really vary from site to site, and it can be tricky to pinpoint why a post hasn’t been indexed as quickly as your other posts as it’s ultimately up to Google’s crawlers! I’d say that as long as the URL inspection tool shows that the page is indexable, your best option would be to sit tight and keep an eye on it. If it takes longer than 3 weeks, it’s possible that something may be missing, but for now, I wouldn’t worry since it’s only been a couple of days!
